"I like the people I meet. It's fun to see the entrepreneurs and listen to their ideas. It's rewarding to point clients in a helpful direction and exciting to see where they end up. We save clients time when they don't have to look so long and hard for information on how to get into business. We save them money by helping them decide that maybe they're not ready to go into business.
Clients need an organized way to go into business or how to conduct business in an existing business on a daily basis. A SCORE counselor helps a client with a business plan, financial plan and management practices. Sometimes a counselor is just a sympathetic third party sounding board. It's still their decision to do research or move forward on their own. When a client shows determination in doing their research, you know they will bring that determination to running their business.
I listen and go through a checklist to make sure a client has asked and covered financial and legal issues in their planning. I like to help clients go through a good business plan from start to finish. I talk to them about their marketing, how they get products to the marketplace and their pricing. It is fun to see them get a hold of the basics of accounting like the general ledger and how that ties to an income statement. They don't know how easy it can be to keep records for tax pruposes and tracking performance."

*******SPEAKS AND WRITES FLUENT PORTUGUESE AND LESS FLUENT SPANISH
A lot of people shiver when you mention April 15th but Bruce Mortensen has it circled on his calendar every year. As an accounting and tax professional, Bruce has over 30 years of experience helping clients get 1040’s and K-1’s into the mail complete and on time. In addition to working as a CPA, Bruce also holds the designation as a Certified Internal Auditor and is an expert at finding and solving accounting problems.
While most accountants find that their jobs keep them indoors, Bruce is an avid outdoorsman. In his spare time Bruce can be found fly fishing on some of Northern Utah’s blue ribbon streams or catching local athletic events around the Salt Lake Area. It might surprise a lot of people to learn that Bruce used to be a river runner for a commercial company on the Colorado River, and a Ski Patrolman for the Intermountain Ski Patrol
We wondered how SCORE was able to recruit this great resource. “Keith Perry, a fellow counselor at SCORE talked to me a year ago about working at SCORE. As I thought about it, I decided that this was a way to give back to the community by helping those who need information and encouragement to start a business.” Among the things that Bruce enjoys while working with clients is “To see the people being counseled find the information they need to get started with their businesses or to get answers for ongoing problems with their business.”

Peter Stevens has been an Army Airborn Ranger, a pilot and financial counselor for SCORE. Peter has spent a large part of his career working in the energy industry, capping his experience as the Vice President of a Fortune 500 company. His various roles have included mergers, acquisitions and pooling of interests.
Small business owners often report that a solid financial plan is critical to success. “Proper budgeting and accounting is a most significant management tool and vital to business success. Most small businesses ignore this fact. I joined Score to offer my expertise to small business who are interested in filling this need.”
What makes Peter an excellent SCORE counselor is his practical experience as well as his educational background. Mr. Stevens holds an ACS, Accounting & Management from Stevens Henager Business College as well as a B.S. in Accounting, with a minor in Economics from the University of Tulsa.
“Some of my favorite companies to work for include Inland Gas Co, Tuloma Gas Products Co. Standard Oil Co. (Indiana), Houston Natural Gas Co., Northwest Alaskan Pipeline Co., Northwest Energy Co. and Alleghany and Western Energy Co.
Why?, because they were all very interesting in their own way, they were all highly ethical, they were all responsive to constructive change and appreciated what I did for them and demonstrated that in many ways.”
In addition to working for SCORE Peter still provides financial and accounting services to new and established businesses. “I enjoy providing benefits and resources to my clients.” When Peter isn’t helping other he can often be found building airplanes or teaching others to fly small airplanes. If your business could benefit from a free financial analysis, Peter is interested in sharing his incredible experience with you. |
